USAC recap – Jan. 14

During its second winter quarter meeting – which was held virtually Jan. 14 – the Undergraduate Students Association Council allocated over $35,000 in funding with $20,000 going toward wildfire relief.

USAC is the official student government representation of the entirety of the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Council meetings are open to all students and ordinarily take place in person at the Bruin Viewpoint Room and on Zoom every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Students can access links to the meetings and agendas on the USAC website under the “Documents” tab or watch the livestream on the USAC Live! channel on YouTube.

Public comment:

  • Leila Salam, the chair of the California Public Interest Research Group’s UCLA chapter, said the organization paused some of its campaigns as a result of the Los Angeles County fires and added that the organization is focusing on providing relief to those impacted by the fires.

Funding allocation:

  • The council allocated $4,978.33 from the Contingency Programming Fund for two USAC entities and 23 non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $7,030.20 from the Supplemental Fund For Service to six non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $500 from the Academic Success Referendum Fund to two non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $3,507.72 from the Academic Affairs Commission Travel Grant Mini Fund to 7 non-USAC entities.

Officer reports:

  • President Adam Tfayli attended the meeting and said his updates would be written but did not update his written report for the week.
  • Internal Vice President Josh Garland said in his written report that his office is planning for its Off-Campus Housing Fair on Jan. 30 and is writing a recap of a town hall hosted by Student Affairs.
  • External Vice President Javier Nuñez-Verdugo said their office’s fellowship application deadline was extended to Jan. 17.
  • General Representative Diego Emilio Bollo’s written report was not updated for the week.
  • General Representative Tommy Contreras’ written report was not updated for the week.
  • General Representative Chris Ramsey said in his written report that the Bruin Relief Initiative – a student government-led effort to provide aid to those impacted by the LA County fires – is organizing an advertising campaign and added that he is working with the On-Campus Housing Council to coordinate meal swipe donations. He also said in the report that he is negotiating with local storage facilities to get a bulk discount for summer storage for UCLA students.

  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Cristopher Espino said his updates for the week were written but did not update his written report for the week.
  • Campus Events Commissioner Robbie Hall said in his written report that he is working on the Bruin Relief Initiative.
  • Community Service Commissioner Carolyn Wang said in her written report that she is also working on the Bruin Relief Initiative alongside other council members.
  • Cultural Affairs Commissioner Alicia Verdugo’s written report was not updated for the week.
  • Facilities Commissioner Alexandra Paul’s written report was not updated for the week.
  • Financial Supports Commissioner Nico Morrone said in his written report that his office finished writing funding guidelines.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Chiara Frank said in her written report that her office is working with the Disabled Student Union to improve access to masks around campus and added that her office is currently working with the UCLA Health Education & Resource Team to create health literacy guides.
  • Transfer Student Representative Mona Tavassoli did not update her written report for the week.
  • International Student Representative Syed Tamim Ahmad said in his written report that he met with staff from UCLA Residential Life and the Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars to address the international community’s needs in regards to the recent wildfires in LA. Ahmad is working on the Bruin Relief Initiative as well, according to his report.

Agenda items:

  • The council unanimously approved the allocation of $20,000 in discretionary funding to the Bruin Relief Initiative, which includes resource and volunteer mobilization aid to those impacted by the fires across LA County.
