An evacuation warning for the Palisades fire is now bordering UCLA’s campus.

Around 7:20 p.m., the city of Los Angeles issued a new evacuation warning to residents reaching the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Veteran Avenue – an intersection that directly borders the UCLA campus. The warning is the first Palisades fire evacuation warning east of Interstate 405 and the nearest to UCLA.

As of 7:50 p.m., there is no evacuation warning or order in place covering the UCLA campus. However, an 8:17 p.m. BruinAlert told students to be “ready to evacuate.”

If an evacuation order is issued for UCLA’s campus, students should follow instructions from BruinAlert, Bruin Post warnings and UCLA Housing staff, according to an emailed statement from a UCLA Office of Emergency Management spokesperson.

The statement, sent at 4:55 p.m., said the university was working with local authorities on evacuation plans for students, including those without a personal vehicle.

“Together with local fire authorities and campus leadership, we would determine whether circumstances call for the full or partial evacuation of the campus is necessary or if it is safer for campus residents and others at UCLA to remain in place,” the spokesperson said in the statement.

Students with cars can also view the Campus Traffic Evacuation Plan for evacuation routes.

A few minutes earlier, the entire area west of I-405 between Sunset Boulevard and Mulholland Drive – parts of which are less than a mile from UCLA’s campus – received an evacuation order.

While firefighters were able to contain 8% of the fire Thursday, the Palisades fire – which has already burned 20,000 acres, according to NBC News – continued to spread Friday.

The warning follows Chancellor Julio Frenk’s statement that classes would remain remote Monday.
