At the 8 a.m. press conference, LA City Fire Chief Kristin Crowley thanked residents of Los Angeles and surrounding areas who followed instructions from emergency services. She said she is expecting decreasing winds to aid firefighting efforts, but there are still significant risks.

The Palisades fire currently has a size of over 17,000 acres with 0% containment, Crowley said. Wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are still expected throughout Thursday.

“Preliminary reports estimate the damage or destroy structures to be in the thousands,” she said at the conference. “It is safe to say that the Palisades fire is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of Los Angeles.”

Crowley also said the fire that started in Sylmar currently has a size of around 800 acres. Fires that had burned in Hollywood and the Sepulveda Basin are now contained, she said.
