USAC recap – Dec. 3

The Undergraduate Students Association Council held its final meeting of fall quarter Dec. 3.
USAC is the official student government representing the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Council meetings are open to all students and usually take place in person at the Bruin Viewpoint Room and on Zoom every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Students can find the links for the meetings on the agenda posted on the USAC website or watch a livestream on the USAC Live! channel on YouTube.
Public comment:
- No public comments were made.
Funding:
- The council allocated $5,600 from the Bruin Advocacy Grant to seven non-USAC entities.
- The council allocated $3,500 from the Arts Restoring Community Fund to two non-USAC entities.
Special presentations:
- The chair of the Student Fee Advisory Committee gave a presentation outlining the committee’s priorities of promoting sustainability and supporting the student body.
- External Vice President Javier Nuñez-Verdugo gave a presentation on the UC Student Association’s Students of Color Conference, which focuses on sociopolitical education and will be held Jan. 31 through Feb. 2. They said applications to attend the conference were open until Dec. 6.
Appointments:
- The council appointed Sujana Sridhar, a fourth-year international development studies and political science student and the former Academic Affairs commissioner, as chair of the USA Elections Board.
- The council appointed Josephine LaCrosse, a second-year history and political science student, as an undergraduate representative to the College Faculty Executive Committee.
- The council appointed Estefany Gomez, a fourth-year molecular, cell and developmental biology student, as an undergraduate representative to the Academic Senate General Education Governance Committee.
- The council unanimously appointed Tracy Le, a third-year political science transfer student, as a representative to the Academic Senate Undergraduate Council.
- The council also appointed Jennifer Ulloa De La Torre, a third-year political science transfer student, as a representative to the Academic Senate Undergraduate Council.
- The council appointed Mariam Ally, a fourth-year political science transfer student, as a representative to the Academic Senate Legislative Assembly.
- The council also appointed Isaias Cruz, a fifth-year sociology transfer student, as a representative to the College Faculty Executive Committee.
- The council appointed Chelsey Lu, a third-year human biology and society student, as a representative to the Academic Senate Committee on Academic Freedom.
- The council also appointed Anastasia Early, a third-year sociology transfer student, as a representative to the Academic Senate Legislative Assembly.
Officer reports:
- President Adam Tfayli said in his written report that he met with a student member of the search committee for the next UC president and added that he spoke to the UC Office of the President’s systemwide director of community safety, Jody Stiger, to address concerns about campus policing and security. Tfayli also said in his report that he met with Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Monroe Gorden Jr. and then-Interim Chancellor Darnell Hunt.

- Internal Vice President Josh Garland said his office held an event handing out free yerba mate.
- Nuñez-Verdugo said they added a new list of community resources already available to UCLA students to their officer report. They added that their office is starting a community newsletter and is discussing support for vulnerable student populations under the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
- General Representative Diego Emilio Bollo said his updates for the week were written. However, his officer report was not updated for the week.
- General Representative Tommy Contreras said in his written report that his office held a financial literacy night and met with ASUCLA administration to discuss pay raises and increased benefits for ASUCLA employees.
- General Representative Chris Ramsey said in his written report that he plans to meet with UCLA Residential Life to advocate for expanding off-campus meal plans. He added in the report that his office is planning to hold multiple career support panels throughout the remainder of the academic year.
- Academic Affairs Commissioner Cristopher Espino said in his written report that his office drafted 12 proposals for surplus funding allocations, met with Ramsey’s office for a proposal to increase meal plan equity and is planning to release a newsletter in January.
- Campus Events Commissioner Robbie Hall said his office is planning a screening of “Nickel Boys” and an indie rock show later in the week.
- Community Service Commissioner Carolyn Wang said her office is still accepting applications to an expenses-paid civic service conference in Richmond, Virginia, that takes place from Feb. 27 to March 2.
- Cultural Affairs Commissioner Alicia Verdugo was not in attendance and did not update their officer report for the week.
- Financial Supports Commissioner Nico Morrone said in his written report that his office would be collecting the lab materials it rented out to students earlier in the quarter.
- Student Wellness Commissioner Chiara Frank said her office’s peer support lounge offered snacks for students during finals week.
- Transfer Student Representative Mona Tavassoli said in her written report that she met with Student Organizations, Leadership & Engagement to discuss her office’s plans for winter quarter.
- International Student Representative Syed Tamim Ahmad said in his written report that his office reached out to student organizations to coordinate collaborations. He added in the report that his office worked with the Muslim Student Association to increase access to halal food options.
Agenda items:
- The council unanimously passed a resolution calling for increased funding for the Campus Assault Resources and Education program.
