Rubio’s Coastal Grill is “closed indefinitely” at Ackerman Union.

On Jan. 2, four days before classes began for winter quarter, a sign outside of Rubio’s in Ackerman Union stated “Rubio’s is closed indefinitely” and advised students to go to Taco Bell Express – which is located one floor below – instead.

The restaurant closed its campus location after the chain filed for bankruptcy and closed a number of its locations, said Christina Manuel, a spokesperson for ASUCLA.

The company announced in a June 5 Facebook post that it closed 48 “underperforming locations” in California, citing the “rising cost of doing business in California.”

“ASUCLA will begin to seek new opportunities for the area to continue offering diverse and exceptional products to the UCLA community,” Manuel said in the statement.

Rubio’s first arrived at UCLA in 1998. At the time, former ASUCLA board of directors member Jim Friedman said Rubio’s was eager to work with ASUCLA and willing to hire students.

In a written statement, a spokesperson for Rubio’s said the company made its decision to close the location facing a court-ordered deadline to negotiate new terms of its lease at Ackerman.

“We have exhausted all attempts to save our UCLA location,” they said in the statement. “While painful, this decision is part of the brand’s long-term strategic restructuring plan to position Rubio’s for success for years to come.”

Asha Timm, a third-year public health student, said although she did not eat at Rubio’s, she found it funny that the sign announcing the closure advertised the Taco Bell on Ackerman A Level.

Second-year computer science student Jeffery Joseph said he was sad about the closure.

“As someone who eats here avidly, I’m genuinely hurt,” Joseph said. “I really like the steak fries.”
