One person was detained at Sproul Cove on Thursday evening after they threatened to use an explosive device, prompting building-wide evacuations.
UCPD issued a statement on the social media platform X just before 9 p.m. Thursday telling students to stay away from the Sproul Cove area due to a reported threat. The department later issued another post saying the subject claimed to have an explosive device and threatened to use it.
Around 8:15 p.m., eight UCPD cars lined up outside Sproul Cove while students began evacuating the building floor-by-floor until they “were pretty certain most people were out of the building,” said James Echols, patrol division lieutenant. UCPD officers then began an investigation of the building with K-9 units until it was determined there was no explosive device.
By around 9:10 p.m., UCPD declared the building clear, and students were let back into the building.
“We take all potential threats seriously and act based on credible information to ensure everyone’s safety,” the post said.
