UCPD reports 3 residential burglaries, arrests 1 individual for on-campus battery

From Thursday to Sunday, UCPD received three reports of residential burglaries at the Sepulveda University Village Apartments and arrested one individual for battery on campus.

According to a crime alert sent Monday, UCPD received three reports of residential burglaries at the Sepulveda apartments, though no suspects were observed at the time of reports. In each case, unknown suspects appear to have forced entry into the apartments through open windows while residents were not at home, the alert said, though it is not clear whether the incidents occurred at the same time, the alert said.

Property stolen included jewelry, cash, clothing and other items, according to the alert, which also said the victims were UCLA students. No injuries or vehicles were reported as related to the incidents.

Additionally, UCPD arrested an individual at Franz Hall on Sunday who matched the description of a battery suspect from earlier in the day, according to a post from UCPD to the social media platform X.

When officers responded to the scene around 1:30 p.m., the individual was reportedly swinging a four-foot-long metal bar. The individual was also found with what was suspected to be meth upon detainment.

UCPD Administrative Division Lieutenant Jeffrey Chobanian said officers notice that residences around Westwood tend to not have doors and windows locked. He added that to secure their homes, people should keep valuables out of sight and familiarize themselves with their neighbors so that they can look out for suspicious activity while residents are out of town.

Chobanian also said that around the holidays, UCPD has extra patrols around the area to prevent burglaries, but the department also relies on community members who stay on campus to make calls reporting suspicious behavior. Many undergraduate students leave Westwood to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families.

“It’s a fine balance between us doing additional patrols and not over policing the areas,” Chobanian said.

These incidents are currently under investigation. Anyone with information can call UCPD at 310-825-1491.
