UCLA extended athletic director Martin Jarmond’s contract an additional three years, the university announced Thursday morning.
Jarmond, who will remain in Westwood until at least 2029, has served as the university’s athletic director since 2020. Under Jarmond’s leadership, UCLA has clinched 18 conference titles – the most recent being UCLA women’s soccer’s Big Ten title – as well as five NCAA championships and made a highly-publicized move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten earlier this year.

After taking over Dan Guerrero’s role in 2020, Jarmond spearheaded growth efforts for the university and its student-athletes. The former Boston College athletic director helped UCLA forge a partnership with Nike and Jordan Brand for uniforms, footwear and equipment, and he helped establish a collaboration with JMI Sports.
“In just four years, Martin has redefined UCLA Athletics – creating new opportunities for Bruins to compete on the biggest stages, making major investments in student-athlete wellness and success, taking important steps to shore up the financial health of our athletics enterprise and putting an inclusive culture at the center of the department,” said UCLA Interim Chancellor Darnell Hunt in a statement.
In the name, image and likeness spheres, Jarmond has set forth initiatives like Champion of Westwood – UCLA’s dedicated NIL collective designed to empower student-athletes navigating the ever-evolving NIL landscape. Champion of Westwood recently streamlined its NIL structure into three dedicated funds for football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball and Olympic sports.

UCLA’s all-time NCAA championship total has moved to 123 – the most in the Big Ten and second-most in the nation – under Jarmond. Under his direction, the school has claimed five NCAA team titles: men’s water polo in 2020, women’s water polo in 2024, back-to-back men’s volleyball championships in 2023 and 2024 and women’s soccer in 2022.
According to a statement from the university, Jarmond’s contract was finalized in the spring – before the departure of former UCLA chancellor Gene Block.
“It has been an honor to steward UCLA Athletics through four of the most transformative years in collegiate athletics, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue to execute on the plan we’ve laid out,” Jarmond said in a statement. “An athletics program cannot be successful without the backing of campus leadership; I appreciate Chancellor Block, Interim Chancellor Hunt and Chancellor-designate Frenk for the support they have shown for me and for our program.”
Through Jarmond’s first four years in Westwood, he appointed 10 new head coaches – nine of whom stepped into their first-ever head coaching roles – including UCLA Athletic Hall of Famers DeShaun Foster for football, Joanna Hayes for track and field and Jenny Johnson Jordan for beach volleyball. The athletic director has not fired a coach through his tenure in Westwood.
One of his most recent hires, Foster, has led his unit to a 4-5 record through the 2024 season – a figure highlighted by the team’s current three-game win streak. Overall, UCLA’s football program has posted a 32-22 record since 2020, earning two bowl game appearances.
Spring 2024 marked a historic first for UCLA, with all 21 teams recording a 3.0 GPA or higher. Overall, student-athlete GPAs after spring 2024 reached a 3.355 average.
“We’ve accomplished a lot in four years, but there’s much more to be done,” Jarmond said in a statement. “I get to work with extremely talented individuals, and they are even better people. Together with our staff, coaches, supporters and alumni, I look forward to continuing to serve our student-athletes and helping them achieve excellence while representing the four letters with pride.”
