USAC recap – Oct. 29

The Undergraduate Students Association Council held its fifth meeting of October on Tuesday.

USAC is the official student government representing the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Council meetings are open to all students and usually take place in person at the Bruin Viewpoint Room and on Zoom every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Students can find the links for the meetings on the agenda posted on the USAC website or watch a livestream on the USAC Live! channel on YouTube.

Public comment:

  • Nilaya Kanuri, the Indian Student Union internal vice president and former USAC Facilities commissioner, said the Indian Student Union was able to expedite its CPC Regular Application funding for its Garba event without needing to use the $5,000 Discretionary Fund allocation from the previous week. Kanuri said ISU will return the $5,000 from the fund to USAC.

Funding:

  • The council allocated $11,535.67 from the Contingency Programming Fund to 48 non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $4,046.24 from the Supplemental Fund for Service to four non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $680 from the Student Wellness Commission Programming Fund to one non-USAC entity.
  • The council allocated $4,463.62 from the Bruin Advocacy Grant to five non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $1,397.01 from the Academic Success Referendum Fund to four non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $300 from the Academic Affairs Commission Travel Grant Mini Fund to one non-USAC entity.
  • The council allocated $31,251.43 from The Green Initiative Fund to six non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $55,117.30 from the Undergraduate Students Association/Board of Directors Programming Fund to 28 non-USAC entities and one USAC entity.
  • The council allocated $64,514.24 from the Community Service Transportation Fund to five USAC entities and 25 non-USAC entities.

Special presentation:

  • Jonathan Wisner, the student government support manager at ASUCLA, introduced Lorelai Claxton, the new Student Government Services specialist staffer. Claxton, who was a member of student government at Cal Poly Pomona, said she is looking forward to helping the council with its initiatives.

Appointment:

  • The council appointed Arya Doshi, a first-year applied mathematics student, as an undergraduate representative to the Academic Senate Committee on Planning and Budget.

Office reports:

  • President Adam Tfayli said he attended a fireside chat with Interim Chancellor Darnell Hunt and other council members.
  • Internal Vice President Josh Garland said in his written statement that he met with Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Life Mick Deluca. Garland added that he also met with Director of ASUCLA Student Union Services Pamela Lewis to discuss Good Clothes Good People and ASUCLA restaurant conditions.
  • External Vice President Javier Nuñez-Verdugo said they, Tfayli and members of the Graduate Student Association met with Hunt to discuss campus safety. They added that their office was able to secure meetings with Student Affairs.
  • General Representative Diego Emilio Bollo said in his written report that he attended a meeting about UCLA’s Hispanic-serving institution initiatives with Chancellor-designate Julio Frenk. He also said he attended a meeting with Bruin Dine and met with the Student Wellness Commission to discuss the Undocumented Students Health Fair. Bollo added in the report that his office’s Latine caucus is set for Wednesday.
  • General Representative Tommy Contreras said his office will host a workshop Monday for public review of UCLA’s interim Time, Place and Manner policies.
  • General Representative Chris Ramsey said in his written report that he is reaching out to Swipe Out Hunger for a collaboration.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Cristopher Espino said he is considering hosting an event or publicizing a survey to determine how students believe his office should spend its funds.
  • Campus Events Commissioner Robbie Hall said his office hosted its Noon Tunes event the previous week on Kerckhoff Patio. Hall added that his office will host a screening of the movie “Anora.”
  • Community Service Commissioner Carolyn Wang said she is working on funding allocations and will attend a meeting of the Student Initiated Outreach Committee.
  • Cultural Affairs Commissioner Alicia Verdugo said ASUCLA Event Services has not responded to their office’s Events Online requests.
  • Financial Supports Commissioner Nico Morrone said he allocated USA/BOD funding.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Chiara Frank said she met with Bollo to discuss planning the Undocumented Students Health Fair in November. She added that her office’s PEER Support Lounge welcome week began.
  • Transfer Student Representative Mona Tavassoli said there will be a football ticket giveaway for transfer students on her office’s Instagram.
  • International Student Representative Syed Tamim Ahmad said in his written report that his office’s Global Bites initiative will be starting the collection of new recipes for spring quarter starting week six, adding that his office will host a journaling event near Janss Steps on Tuesday. Ahmad said his office also met with Residential Life to discuss his office’s Bruins Around the World Event.
