A goodbye to the fall season came with a goodbye to an impactful player.
After traveling to Atlanta, Georgia for the East Lake Cup, UCLA women’s golf finished its fall season with a consolation match victory over No. 7 Oregon. Before its victory over the Ducks, the squad began the tournament with a loss to No. 5 USC.
Not only did the East Lake Cup mark the last tournament of the fall season – it was also senior Zoe Antoinette Campos’ last tournament ever as a Bruin. After the fall season, Campos will leave the collegiate golf world for the professional one. However, her early departure does not come without a lack of accomplishments at the collegiate level as a two-time WGCA All-American. With the departure of the senior, there will be an open spot on the starting five for the spring season.
At the tournament, seniors Tiffany Le, Natalie Vo and Campos, and freshman Francesca Fiorellini bested their Oregon opponents in the final round of the match-play tournament. With four of the starting five recording a victory, UCLA was able to secure a victory.
“We were all really excited to play, especially because we got into the tournament from playing well at Nationals last year,” Vo said. “The tournament course was definitely difficult, and we played all right, but I think as a team on the last day there were a lot of positives.”
After ending the fall season in Georgia, the Bruins will pick up again in February.
“We plan to meet with the girls tomorrow individually, and we’re going to do a lot of one-on-one work this November and stagger our practices so we get more face time with each one of our girls. Hopefully that will help each of them really pinpoint what they need to work on,” said coach Alicia Um Holmes.
While experience dominates the starting five – with four out of five starters possessing senior status – Fiorellini, a freshman from Rome, Italy, brings youth and perspective to the UCLA squad.
“She’s (Fiorellini) a high level player who brings a lot of experience with her, but at the same time, coming to America and being so far from home, it’s a new environment and a new system for her, and I think she’s acclimating well to it,” Um Holmes said.
Fiorellini is among the many players that will practice in the off-season in preparation for the spring.
“We definitely have areas where we need to work on, and I think that this break will help us kind of work on those areas … because we didn’t have much time in this fall,” Vo said.
This fall season has shown a slight decrease in production compared to last years for UCLA. After tying for fifth at the Stanford Intercollegiate last fall, the team finished tied for thirteenth this year.
However, Um Holmes said the team is close to success.
“If you just look at the way we’ve scored or what our rankings are, it seems like we’re really far behind, but having seen it up close, I know that we’re right there,” Um Holmes said.
With the conclusion of their fall season, the Bruins will head into a three-month break.
