Some may think concrete would hardly require sweeping.
But on Tuesday, the Bruins took their brooms to the tennis courts.
Seven members of UCLA men’s tennis traveled to Tempe, Arizona, for the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, held from Oct. 17 to Oct. 22.
And in the end, Bruins swept the tournament.
No. 55 sophomore Spencer Johnson ultimately emerged victorious, claiming the men’s singles title, while junior Aadarsh Tripathi and senior Alexander Hoogmartens took home the doubles title. The trio’s performance earned them trips to the NCAA Individual Championships, happening from Nov. 19 to Nov. 24.
“I couldn’t have been happier,” said coach Billy Martin.
Johnson – who was awarded Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Wednesday – won six matches en route to his eventual crowning, including ranked wins over San Diego’s No. 91 Savriyan Danilov in the semifinals, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2), and UC Irvine’s No. 121 Noah Zamora in the finals, 6-2, 6-3.
With doubles partner redshirt sophomore Emon van Loben Sels – a tandem ranked No. 77 in the country – Johnson made the quarterfinals before losing to Conrad Brown and Dominique Rolland of UC Santa Barbara.
The Ladera Ranch, California, local’s performance comes after a rather mediocre showing at the ITA All-American Championships, where Johnson failed to make the main draw in either singles or doubles. In fact, results were up across the board for UCLA this past weekend.
“Well, we had preparation,” Martin said. “We had zero for All-Americans. Guys flew in three days beforehand. We got to hit a little bit, and then they’re off and going – we were at a little disadvantage, especially with that tournament.”
Tripathi and Hoogmartins needed five wins to capture the doubles title in Tempe. The final matchup came down to the wire, with the UCLA pair victorious 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) over San Diego duo Savriyan Danilov and Iiro Vasa.
The duo hadn’t competed together before the tournament. At the ITA All-American championships, Tripathi competed with freshman Rudy Quan, while Hoogmartins didn’t compete in doubles.
But with Quan competing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, while the Bruins were in Arizona, Tripathi needed a new partner.
“I love playing with both of them equally,” Tripathi said. “They’re both very different players so it’s adjusting my game a little bit. (But) they have to adjust their game to grow with me. I’m not the easiest to play doubles with so I would give credit to both of my partners.”
While he fell short of a Bruin versus Bruin finals showdown, van Loben Sels made the singles semifinals – a result that Martin said establishes the Sacramento, California, local as a big contributor for the season ahead.
Over three ranked matches in the tournament, van Loben Sels earned his first career ranked win against No. 101 Karl Lee of USC 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the second round before falling to Zamora and Danilov in the semifinals and consolation rounds, respectively.
Though the Bruins are certainly happy with their sweep at Tempe, the team has their sights set on even more hardware.
“Our goal this year is to win the NCAA championship,” Tripathi said. “Everybody in our team has really bought into that mindset.”
