After commemorating the weekend with two wins, the Bruins renewed their winning streak.
No. 2 UCLA men’s water polo (16-1, 1-1 MPSF) secured two wins this weekend, first claiming an 18-12 victory against No. 7 Pepperdine (14-4) on Saturday. The team then went on to beat No. 11 Princeton (14-6) on Sunday by a score of 10-8.
The Bruins’ previously scheduled match against Westcliff on Sunday was left unfulfilled after an unexpected cancellation.
After suffering their first loss of the season last weekend, redshirt sophomore attacker Frederico Jucá Carsalade said the team bounced back with strong performances this weekend.
“After a loss, it’s hard to come back, but we really had to step up our training. We had a really good week of training, and intensity was really high,” Carsalade said. “We competed really highly against each other, so I think that was the biggest change.”
In the first match, against the Waves, the Bruins led throughout the first quarter, framing a 5-3 score.
After halftime, the team expanded their two-point lead with five more goals across the third quarter, ultimately besting Pepperdine 18-12.
“Whenever we get out in front, we can’t sleep, and unfortunately, we slept a little bit and they cut it close,” Carsalade said. “We know we’re a great team as well, and great teams have the ability to come back after some slip, so that’s what we did.”
Although Pepperdine may have been an unfamiliar foe for some of the team, graduate student center Nico Tierney is well acquainted with the other side of the pool.
Tierney – a transfer from Pepperdine – scored four goals against his old teammates.
“It was pretty fun. It’s always good to compete against your friends, and I’m really close with a lot of those guys,” Tierney said. “I actually had a really fun time.”
Freshman attacker Ryder Dodd beat his personal scoring best for the third consecutive time this season, reaching eight goals.
Carsalade and five additional Bruins netted goals throughout the match, one of them coming from redshirt junior attacker Eli Liechty.
Liechty was the first player to score a goal during UCLA’s next match against Princeton. While three points ahead, the Bruins allowed the Tigers to score more goals in the third quarter but no goals were netted in the fourth.
The Bruins’ game against the Tigers extended their untainted win streak to 21 total victories against the team.
With a canceled match behind them, the Bruins prepare to face their crosstown rivals – No. 3 USC – next weekend.
“I think we’re feeling pretty confident. We had a close game with them a couple weekends ago,” Tierney said. “So as long as we do what we need to do this week, we’ll be able to take care of business over the weekend.”
