The Bruins’ weekend consisted of wins and personal bests.
No. 1 UCLA men’s water polo (13-0) secured three victories this weekend at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins faced off against No. 12 UC Santa Barbara (12-5) on Friday, landing a 16-8 win before taking down No.15 Loyola Marymount (3-6) by a score of 21-8 and RV Air Force (8-8) by 21-10 on Saturday.
Freshman attacker Ryder Dodd led the charge with 16 goals across the weekend.
“There’s no doubt he’s got unique abilities and finds ways to score the ball,” said coach Adam Wright. “But the thing I like most is (that) he’s settling in day by day with having a larger role each and every time, and that’s also communicating. But that’s a pretty good stat line for him.”
Top freshman scorer Dodd said he attributes his performance this weekend to two core motives.
“First is just my teammates. I think they’re doing a great job pulling people away,” Dodd said. “And then, it’s my work ethic. … If I’m willing to put 110% for each shot, I have a very high percentage of it going in.”
The game against the Gauchos held achievements for the Bruins across the scoreboard. Dodd scored a season-high five goals and redshirt sophomore utility Ben Larsen matched his career high of three goals, while both redshirt junior center Eli Liechty and graduate student Nico Tierney netted two goals apiece.
Dodd later bested his personal performance, scoring six goals against the Lions.
The Bruins held the upper hand against the Gauchos and Lions, holding a minimum of three- and four-goal leads in each quarter, respectively. Meanwhile, the Bruins allowed the Falcons to outscore them five to three in the third quarter.
Wright said there can’t be a repeat of that in the future.
“Our intensity slipped there and we absolutely did get outscored,” Wright said. “Credit to Air Force. That’s a problem for us because defense is our staple, and when we play great defense, everything goes from there.”
The Bruins picked up their scoring, with redshirt junior attacker Trey Doten landing two of the team’s next four goals.
“We’re playing ourselves more than anyone else, and I think we’re just going to move on and go towards next weekend against Cal,” Doten said.
UCLA will face off against No. 3 Stanford and No. 6 California at Spieker Aquatics Center next weekend.
