It was anyone can cook night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
In UCLA men’s soccer’s (4-2-3, 1-1-1 Big Ten) victory over Westmont (3-1-3) on Tuesday night, it used 21 different players – the most this season. And for coach Ryan Jorden, the formula was successful, with the Bruins winning 5-1.
“We know we’ve got a deep team. We started three central midfielders who did really, really well for us, who haven’t been starting games for us, and they’re all really good soccer players,” Jorden said.

Twenty minutes into the game, junior midfielder Cam Wilkerson played a through-ball into the box and junior forward Nikolai Rojel – in only his second start of the season – turned and passed the ball back into the net to put the Bruins in the lead. Although the Bruins went in at halftime with only a one goal advantage, they picked up the pace quickly in the second half.
“We clarified a couple things from a defending shape perspective and worked on a couple things just with regards to trying to create mismatch and overload,” Jorden said.

The changes quickly appeared to yield results, with Westmont goalkeeper Brady Highfill gifting the ball to graduate student midfielder/forward Sveinn Hauksson. Sophomore forward Jacob Diaz – who earned his first career start – scored his first Bruin goal, lobbing the ball into the Warriors’ net from over 40 yards out.
“The way we’re moving the ball around, I think it was really fast. The other team wasn’t really expecting it,” Diaz said. “They didn’t know how to handle it, and I think we just took advantage of our opportunities.”
Three minutes later, freshman forward Artem Vovk used his first touch to take the ball away from a Westmont defender and placed it in the bottom left-hand corner of the goal.

“I saw it coming from a long time ago,” Vovk said. “(You’ve) just got to keep working hard, give 100 (percent) all the time, and the time will come.”
The Bruins scored again after sophomore defender Phillip Naef beat his defender on the Bruins’ left flank to cross the ball into Hauksson. Hauksson placed the goal past Westmont substitute goalkeeper Mario Floriano to score his second goal of the week.
UCLA struck again just one minute later when sophomore forward Sam Scott got on the end of a long ball in behind the Westmont defense and placed it past the Westmont goalkeeper at the far post. The goal was Scott’s first, making him the third player to net his debut goal.
“Artem Vovk is making his debut. Sam Scott’s played in two games. Jacob Diaz has played only in a couple games. All three of them score,” Jorden said. “I think that shows, hopefully validates who they are, how they’re feeling about the work they’re putting in and the growth they’re taking in.”
