Ryan Campbell had a flashback Thursday night – the 2023 NCAA title loss.
But the graduate student goalkeeper, and Stanford transfer, was not about to let that happen again.
“I could see the NCAA highlight and I thought that not today, it wasn’t going to be us,” Campbell said.
A sixth save ended up sealing the deal.
No. 9 UCLA women’s soccer (5-1-1) squared off against Tennessee (3-1-1) in a match that ended in a 0-0 tie.
UCLA avoided its second loss of the season when Campbell made a key save in the 90th minute. With Tennessee’s defender Sarah Bridenstine aiming for the bottom left corner of the net, Campbell managed to make her sixth save of the match, securing a scoreless tie for UCLA.
“She (Ryan) made a couple key saves that we needed,” said coach Margueritte Aozasa.
Campbell’s efforts were deemed important as the graduate goalkeeper had just one more save than Tennessee’s five.
“In the first few minutes of the game I knew it was gonna demand a lot of me,” Campbell said.
The second half of the match saw a change in mentality from UCLA’s side.
“Our talk at halftime was all about personality and not being afraid to make mistakes and showing the reasons we brought each player to the team,” Aozasa said.
In the first half, the shooting statistics were modest, but telling. UCLA managed five shots, compared to Tennessee’s three. The first half ended with neither team able to break the deadlock.
The second half saw a shift in dynamics as the Bruins raised their offensive pressure – taking 11 shots. Despite the increased activity, the Bruins still could not finish their chances.
“I wish we had played the second half twice, if we had played the second half we would have won,” Aozasa said.
Although Campbell said the team wouldn’t be satisfied if they finished the game without a win, she added that it’s important to have matches like this as they only provide motivation.
“Obviously, it’s not a win but a tie isn’t something we are upset about,” Campbell said.
