Though the Bruins won’t be back in school for a while, the women’s soccer team is already in full swing.
On Sunday afternoon, No. 11 UCLA women’s soccer (2-0) kicked off its home opener against UC Riverside (0-2) at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
With yet another 3-0 win, the Bruins have won back-to-back games to open the season, following their triumph over Long Beach State last Thursday.
Although the Bruins won their match, coach Margueritte Aozasa said the team’s performance wasn’t as sharp as she wanted.
“We were okay today,” Aozasa said. “I thought the second half was much better than the first half in terms of what we wanted to see. But credit to the group, they found a way to put some goals in and created a lot of good chances, but we weren’t sharp enough to finish them today.”
Despite their close proximity as schools under the University of California umbrella, this was the first-ever meeting between the Bruins and the Highlanders in women’s soccer.
Thirteen minutes was all it took to kick things into high gear, with UCLA’s first goal courtesy of junior forward Bridgette Marin-Valencia’s shot toward the bottom right past Riverside goalkeeper Allee Grashoff. This goal marked Marin-Valencia’s second in as many games, having scored Thursday. Marin-Valencia attributed some of the results to the team’s passing and defense.
“We’ve been very big on our defense,” Marin-Valencia said. “I think in comparison to last year, our passing and our defense goes crazy.”
UCLA’s second goal was set up by a free kick following a Riverside foul just outside the box. In the 31st minute, freshman forward Bella Winn, assisted by graduate student midfielder Meg Boade, delivered a shot into the bottom right corner for her first collegiate goal.
“I’m actually from the Big Ten, so I actually haven’t played any of these West Coast teams, which is all we’ve been doing so far,” Boade, who is a Northwestern transfer, said. “I do hope I can help us with that, kind of adjust more quickly to a new conference when it comes.”
This game marked the second of the season with a starting lineup featuring both fresh and veteran faces, which helped Boade adjust to her new role as a Bruin.
“I feel like it’s been new for me, picking up all the systems, but all the returners seem like they just have a really good grasp on what the other coaches are asking for,” Boade said. “So (they are) able to help us get acclimated really quickly, which has been super helpful.”
By the end of the first period, the Bruins outshot the Highlanders 12-0. By the end of the match, UCLA raised their shot total to 24 while holding UC Riverside to one.
Marin-Valencia said she is excited about the new additions to the team, highlighting their impact on the upcoming season.
“I think we got a lot of new freshies here and a lot of new transfers,” Marin-Valencia said. “They came into the team really welcoming, really confident, really excited, and that’s what we need.”
UCLA will take on Cal Poly on Thursday in its second away game of the season.
