Three members of UCLA baseball are on the brink of playing MLB-affiliated professional baseball.
Right-hander Luke Jewett, second baseman Duce Gourson and shortstop Cody Schrier were all selected in the 2024 MLB Draft – the former two Monday and the latter Tuesday. The trio continues the Bruins’ streak of producing at least one Major League draftee every year since the Draft’s inception in 1965 and grows the list to 129 Bruins drafted since coach John Savage took over the program in 2005.
The Colorado Rockies selected Jewett in the eighth round with the No. 228 pick – making Jewett the eighth Bruin selected by the Rockies since 2017. The Ladera Ranch, California, local was named the Friday night starter in 2024 after working the previous two seasons out of the bullpen. Last season, Jewett posted a 4.35 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 7.8 K/9 across 14 starts and 82.2 innings pitched for the Bruins during his junior campaign.
Gourson heard his name called No. 264 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth round. The second baseman has led the Bruins in OPS every season since 2022 – slashing .300/.435/.482 with 21 home runs, 23 stolen bases and 119 RBI across 168 games in three seasons.
On the final day of the draft, 2022 Freshman All-American Schrier was selected as the No. 394 pick by the Miami Marlins in the 13th round. Originally projected as a top-three round pick ahead of the 2024 season, an OPS of .674 during his junior year coincided with the shortstop’s drop to day three of the Draft.
While Jewett, Gourson and Schrier were the only players drafted from Westwood, they weren’t the only players from UCLA’s 2021 recruiting class – ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time – to hear their names called. Former Bruins in LSU left-hander Gage Jump, LSU right-hander Thatcher Hurd, Arizona State outfielder Nick McLain and USC infielder Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek were selected in the second, third, third and 20th rounds, respectively.
Despite being ranked the nation’s No. 28 recruiting class, UCLA’s incoming freshmen caught the eye of MLB front offices. The Bruins’ top-ranked recruit, left-hander Ethan Schiefelbein – ranked No. 28 in the 2024 class – was selected with the No. 72 pick by the Detroit Tigers in the second round. A second-ranked recruit, catcher Dylan Fien – ranked No. 103 – was picked in the seventh round with the No. 196 pick by the Oakland Athletics. Right-hander Will Gagnon – who committed to UCLA after spending the past two seasons at Reedley, a community college – was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 14th round.
Getting drafted doesn’t guarantee a player will soon suit up in the Minor Leagues, however. Draftees have until Aug. 1 to either sign with their MLB franchise or prepare for their next season of collegiate baseball.
