The Bruins are preparing for their final course of the season.

But for one, it’s a course she knows very well.

“I have a lot of experience on this golf course – it’s right down the road from my house,” said sophomore Meghan Royal. “I played my high school CIF here, and now I’m here for a much bigger tournament. It’s honestly a full circle moment.”

After placing fourth at the Las Vegas regionals, No. 1 seed UCLA women’s golf is headed to the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, for the 54-hole first round of the NCAA championships. All 30 teams, consisting of the top five teams from each of the six regionals, will be vying for a spot in the top 15 in order to advance to round two.

Of those 15 teams, the top eight will move on to the final round of matchplay, where a national champion will be crowned.

UCLA will play alongside all five of the other No. 1 seeds at the finals, with Stanford, LSU and USC qualifying first in their respective regions. Like the Bruins, the Gamecocks placed fourth in their region despite being a No. 1 seed, with the final No. 1 seed — the Demon Deacon — qualifying in third in their region.

The national championship will be close to home for the Bruins, with the course just a two-hour drive south toward San Diego. While the course is unfamiliar to almost all of the team, weather conditions will likely be similar to Westwood’s.

Coach Alicia Um Holmes said Royal will serve as a guide for the course during their Wednesday walk-through.

“It’s a very tough golf course, and the greens are going to be really firm because they’re new,” Royal said. “So with the team, we’ve been really focusing on our approach shots and our wedges and placement.”

Having never played the course, junior Zoe Antoinette Campos said she plans on taking advice from Royal.

Campos, who was also selected for the All-Pac-12 team, tied for first place at regionals. Her fourth win this season matched the all-time UCLA record for single-season wins, bringing her to a career total of six.

“I’ve kind of had my eye on those records for a while now,” Campos said. “To tie, it’s incredible, and then just to have another opportunity to even break it would be really cool.”
