The Cultural Affairs Commission announced it was canceling its events for the rest of the academic year.

The Undergraduate Students Association Council office, led by Cultural Affairs Commissioner Alicia Verdugo, released a statement on Instagram Monday morning, citing the violence in Palestine, Congo, Haiti and Sudan, as well as “white supremacist attacks and police brutality” participants of the UCLA Palestine solidarity encampment faced, as the reasons for canceling the events.

A tent with the commission’s logo and text reading “PAID FOR BY USAC,” was present at the encampment before its dispersal by police May 2. Verdugo said in a USAC meeting that they had been arrested during the dispersal.

The canceled events include the commission’s Carnival with the Caribbean Students Association, Hip Hop Appreciation Month events, its For the Girls and Blueprint concerts, a tour to Little Ethiopia and the commission’s annual JazzReggae Festival. The statement also said CAC was “honored” to have participated in the encampment and stands in solidarity with Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA, the UC Divest Coalition and United Auto Workers 4811 – the graduate student researchers and academic scholars union voting on a strike authorization this week.

The commission’s statement also called on UCLA to meet the demands of the encampment, including divestment from companies related to the Israeli military, disclosure of UC finances and the abolition of policing on campus.

Verdugo and their office have been outspoken about their solidarity with the people of Palestine since October. Directors in the office released a statement May 3 expressing their discontent with the UCLA administration’s response to the April 30 violent attack against the encampment and its subsequent police-led sweep the following day.
