UCLA men’s basketball adds four-star point guard Trent Perry

The stop sign was within view.

Seeming to signal his last roster move after a flurry of changes, coach Mick Cronin appeared to have filled his 13th and final scholarship spot April 27. Most coaches would sit back and relax, satisfied with the squad they’d assembled and ready to work.

But this train just keeps on rolling.

Harvard-Westlake point guard Trent Perry committed to UCLA men’s basketball and signed his National Letter of Intent, both announced via Instagram on Wednesday evening. The four-star recruit and No. 30 overall prospect in the class of 2024 – according to 247Sports – is Cronin’s third acquisition of the recruiting cycle but will be the ninth newcomer for the Bruins next season.

“Trent has established himself as a dynamic playmaker, and we believe that he has a very high ceiling as his game continues to develop,” Cronin said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to having him in Westwood.”

A pair of shooting guards precede Perry on the high school path. Four-star prospect Eric Freeny and walk-on Christian Horry are already committed to the program, and the latter played alongside Perry at Harvard-Westlake. Six transfers charted new paths to Westwood earlier this offseason.

With the addition, Cronin has converted a Trojan into a Bruin, much like he did with guard Kobe Johnson through the portal. Perry initially signed with USC in November 2023 but reopened his recruitment in early April following the departure of coach Andy Enfield.

Perry will ride into college on the highest of highs. He was named Mission League MVP and Gatorade’s 2023-2024 California Boys Basketball Player of the Year after leading Harvard-Westlake to a CIF Open Division state championship for a second consecutive year. No player before him in school history had won the prestigious Gatorade recognition.

The 6-foot-4, 175-pound guard averaged 18.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game as a senior while thriving beyond the arc. He sank just below half of his 3s, shooting 47.2% on 144 attempts from deep.

Reliability at the charity stripe – to the tune of 86% at the line – complements Perry’s sharp-shooting skills. It was his very free throws in the waning seconds of his final high school contest that secured his team’s back-to-back state champion status.

The presence of sophomore Dylan Andrews, freshman Sebastian Mack and Louisville transfer Skyy Clark at Perry’s primary position figures to make his first season a fight for minutes. Still, the Bruins will welcome his toolset after finishing No. 120 and No. 227 in free-throw and 3-point percentages last season, respectively.

Perry’s signing of an NLI guarantees his scholarship, despite the fact that UCLA appeared to have no scholarships to give after adding Loyola Marymount transfer guard Dominick Harris. A player on scholarship will have to switch to walk-on status as a result – something financially possible with name, image and likeness deals.
