Broxton Avenue came to life Friday as the Bruin Flea hosted its last event of the school year.

The monthly flea, held from 3 to 8:30 p.m on the third Friday of each month, featured vendors and activities including henna art, jewelry and clothes. UCLA alumna and Delta Sigma Phi chapter brothers, Luis Lopez and Holland Smith, founded the flea while at UCLA and brought it to Broxton Avenue in October, with a portion of proceeds going to local nonprofits and student organizations.

Lopez, event director of the Bruin Flea, said this month’s proceeds will go to the Westwood Village Improvement Association’s ambassadors team to assist the group in providing toiletry kits for Westwood’s unhoused population. Starting next fall, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority will table at the flea to provide educational opportunities and resources.

Lopez said with the success of previous Bruin Fleas, interest has grown, and he is happy to see more shoppers and vendors.

“Slowly but surely we’re becoming more and more established. A lot more people are starting to reach out to us, and we’re getting a lot more interest and a lot more vendors are interested,” Lopez said. “Now we’re trying to start off our own merch, our team is growing … and we’re always going to be here, sticking to Westwood.”

At the event, organizers handed out free tote bags with a custom live-screen printed graphic created by Jayson Perez, owner of streetwear clothing brand NewLAThrift. Perez said he enjoyed the crowd at his first Bruin Flea experience.

“This is cool because it’s in the heart of town,” he said. “There’s a bunch of college students. A lot of students aren’t even from California.”

The Bruin Flea often features student vendors.

This month’s edition included Smolhandsss, a beaded jewelry and UCLA sticker booth run by second-year biology student Josephine Ellena. Ellena said she decided to start making beaded jewelry while bored over the summer, adding that it gives her a good outlet for taking a break and a chance to make extra money.

While this was Ellena’s first time at the Bruin Flea, she said she has previously sold goods at Bruin Bash and on Bruin Walk. She added that she enjoyed the atmosphere of the evening market.

A variety of other vendors were also present at the flea, including artist Arianna Arganda, who sells hand-painted earrings, magnets and prints.

Teleport, a second-hand thrifting app, made its second appearance at the flea, giving attendees $10 to use at merchant booths if they downloaded its app.

Maya Sepulveda, a henna artist, said she enjoyed the ambiance at her first Bruin Flea.

“The people seem to be very nice,” she said. “They are welcoming, very talkative and really supportive.”

With this being the Bruin Flea’s fourth event on Broxton Avenue, many attendees have become regulars. Me’ahni Lomas, a second-year neuroscience student, and Sophia Delancey, a first-year business economics student, said they have been to the flea numerous times before.

“It’s really cool and sustainable,” Lomas said. “It’s also a great way to meet vendors or just make random new friends.”
