Gianluca Ballotta and Ray Lo were tied at six games apiece in the second set.

A seesawing tiebreaker tipped in favor of the latter, awarding him both the frame and the match over the Bruin sophomore.

Court five’s result deadlocked the Bruins and Ducks at 3-3.

But when junior Giacomo Revelli – who dropped his opening frame – outlasted Matthew Burton in the following two and clinched No. 25 UCLA men’s tennis (9-6, 2-2 Pac-12) a 4-3 win Friday night over Oregon (12-10, 1-3) at the Oregon Student Tennis Center.

“I’m just exuberant that he’s (Revelli is) going to gain a lot of confidence from that,” said coach Billy Martin. “He’s lost a lot of close matches recently, but winning a match like that is going to give him confidence. And he’s a great player, and he has done so many great things for us. It was do or die for us, and he came through.”

After a 6-4 loss in the first set, Revelli upended the plot to seize the second 6-4.

Three consecutive games in the final frame – capped off by an overhead smash – propelled Revelli to victory and triggered a Bruin sleuth to swarm the court amid raucous cheers.

“It was definitely a close moment in the match – the crux of the whole dual meet lay in those games,” Revelli said. “I felt I did well to handle the pressure and win some important points with my teammates supporting me.”

Revelli, who snapped a four-game singles losing skid in Friday’s bout, couldn’t concoct the same success in doubles alongside redshirt junior Timothy Li.

UCLA’s No. 1 singles pair has found victory elusive, tasting triumph just once this season through 15 affairs.

“It really came down to our service game where we didn’t hold as well as we normally do,” Revelli said. “Generally, we didn’t put away enough volleys, and the connection has somewhat been missing – even though we still get along great off the court. I think the competitiveness that our opponents bring has been, at times, overwhelming.”

Li and Revelli faltered 6-2 against Burton and Quinn Vandecasteele on the top court, sparking a downward spiral for the Bruins in Friday’s doubles competition.

Lo and Lenn Luemkemann mimicked their teammates, forging a 6-2 victory over freshman Spencer Johnson and redshirt freshman Emon van Loben Sels on court two.

Although UCLA’s captains – junior Alexander Hoogmartens and redshirt senior Govind Nanda – prevented a third iteration of the defeat with a 6-2 win of their own, two losses in doubles contention veered the Ducks into an early lead.

“I expect great leadership from them (Hoogmartens and Nanda),” Martin said. “Alex is still coming off an injury and looking like he’s getting sharper and sharper as we go along. … Great effort from those two guys to get their doubles point.”

Friday’s victory hinged on four singles wins for the Bruins.

Sweep, sweep, sweep – UCLA catapulted to an early 3-1 lead. Senior Jorge Plans Gonzalez, Johnson and Hoogmartens each managed straight-set victories over their adversaries.

“They (Oregon) came out firing and shocked us a little bit with their court speed and everything else,” Martin said. “Once we got into singles, we had great success. … And thank goodness Giacomo Revelli came through and was the hero today.”

And despite two Ducks leveling the scorecard with sweeps of Nanda and Ballotta, Revelli’s 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 exhibition sealed the clash.
