The Bruins are returning home three down in the loss column following a series where they didn’t lead for a single inning.

“We didn’t get what we wanted out of this weekend,” said coach John Savage. “But at the same time, we can learn from it and get better from it.”

In its only regular season series against a Big 12 opponent, UCLA baseball (3-3) was swept Sunday afternoon by No. 5 TCU (7-0) in Fort Worth, Texas, dropping the final game of the series in a run-rule loss 13-3 after losing Friday and Saturday 4-3 and 6-3, respectively.

The Bruins were unable to execute offensively throughout the whole weekend, amassing 21 runners left on base and only nine runs scored over the series.

“I think we just got to be better about being more consistent and committing to our approach and committing to baseball,” said graduate student catcher Quintt Landis. “Get them on, get them over, get them in.”

After starting the season undefeated after a sweep of Gonzaga, UCLA fell into a hole from the get-go Friday.

The Bruins, who trailed by three in the third, slowly climbed back into the game, pulling within one run in the seventh frame, but were unable to plate the final tying run – a run-scoring trend that would continue across the weekend.

Landis – who played in 105 games at Pepperdine before transferring this season – said the weekend will help the team grow.

“This was a great learning experience,” Landis said. “This isn’t one that we wanted to have to go through. This is one that’s going to make us better.”

Junior right-hander Luke Jewett started the series opener, allowing a pair of home runs in six innings of work, the longest Bruin start of the weekend.

UCLA fell behind early once again Saturday due to a pair of early runs, but a four-run TCU rally in the sixth – capped by a three-run home run – proved to be the difference in the 6-3 affair.

The Bruins once again struggled to capitalize on offense and were unable to narrow the multi-run deficit set by the Horned Frogs. Right-handers freshman Luke Rodriguez and sophomore Cody Delvecchio tossed 4.2 innings of shutout baseball, allowing zero combined hits.

Delveccio, who posted a 4.20 earned run average in 45 innings last season, notched four strikeouts in 2.1 frames.

“I had a lot of appearances last year, so I’ll try to build off last year,” Delvecchio said. “But as a team, building up the younger guys and showing them what all of us can do to make our team better will help us grow as a team.”

Sunday, however, was over quickly after it began. The Bruins continued to fail to capitalize on opportunities, loading the bases twice in the first three innings but only amassing two runs while the Horned Frogs racked up seven for themselves.

Sophomore right-hander Michael Barnett struggled in his five innings of work, allowing 13 hits and eight earned runs. Landis and junior shortstop Cody Schrier collected two hits each, with the latter hitting the only Bruin home run of the weekend on a solo shot in the fifth.

UCLA will face off against Nevada and Long Beach State at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, before playing in the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic.

Landis said UCLA hopes to utilize the many upcoming games as a way for the team to prove itself.

“So I think we’re just looking to make a statement and show what UCLA Bruin baseball is now, and I think it 100% starts this week,” Landis said.
