Two veteran Bruins are searching for new homes.

UCLA football senior wide receivers Kam Brown and Keegan Jones entered the transfer portal Monday morning. Both entrances were initially reported by On3, with Jones confirming the decision on social media later in the day. Although the transfer portal does not open for all players until Dec. 4, graduate students are permitted to enter at any time. The fifth-years completed their undergraduate educations prior to 2023 and were enrolled in graduate programs this season.

Brown – who transferred to UCLA from Texas A&M in January 2021 after two years with the Aggies – was the Bruins’ fifth-leading receiver in his first year and third-leading receiver in 2022. However, he has seen less involvement this season, making just 13 catches across nine games for 163 yards and one touchdown – all career lows during his UCLA career.

Jones also had a decrease in usage this season. Previously listed as a running back, the now-wide receiver was a dynamic threat out of the backfield or out wide for the Bruins in 2022. His breakout campaign featured an appearance in all 12 of UCLA’s games, posting 706 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns.

This year, Jones had less than a fifth of the carries he had last season, as well as just eight receptions compared to 21 in 2022. He was once again relegated to the second option on kick returns despite the departure of Kazmeir Allen, with redshirt senior running back Colson Yankoff taking over Allen’s role as primary returner on kickoffs.

Brown and Jones are the first two UCLA players to announce their departures from the program, but they are unlikely to be the last, given that 21 and seven players entered the portal in 2022 and 2023, respectively. After Saturday’s loss to California in the regular-season finale, coach Chip Kelly said this week will serve as a time for the team to assess where it stands in terms of personnel for the future.

“Those are discussions that will be had with those guys to see where your roster is so you know where you are moving forward,” Kelly said.

Kelly has been active in the transfer portal in recent years, with the team’s leading rusher in junior running back Carson Steele and second-leading receiver in redshirt sophomore wide receiver J.Michael Sturdivant making up just two of the Bruins’ 14 transfers this season.

The transfer portal cycle will continue to unfold for UCLA – and college football at large – over the coming weeks.
