Bruin blocks have secured another win.
UCLA women’s volleyball (4-1) participated in the Long Beach State Tournament, where they conquered Indiana (3-3) on Friday and Long Beach State (2-3) on Saturday.
The inaugural matchup between Indiana and UCLA ended with a 3-1 score. The fourth and final set extended into extra points before the Bruins eventually bested the Hoosiers 27-25.
Friday’s contest showcased the strength of this year’s squad.
“I think it starts from our service lines that make sure we have a really good block set up,” said associate head coach Jen Malcom.
The fourth frame saw the Hoosiers at a set point with a 24-23 advantage. Graduate student middle blocker Desiree Becker sided out with a kill on an assist from freshman setter Ashley Mullen. Sophomore outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette then aced Indiana to give the Bruins a match point at the service line.
Ultimately, a lengthy rally that included a sophomore outside hitter Carly Hendrickson kill and a pancake dig by junior libero Peyton Dueck culminated in the overtime win for the Bruins.
UCLA gained its largest lead of the frame at 9-6, following Hendrickson’s solo block on Indiana outside hitter Kaley Rammelsberg in one of her first games with the squad.
Hendrickson said these techniques are all products of a group effort.
“A lot of that credit goes to our middles,” Hendrickson said. “Our staff does a great job of understanding the court and working on techniques for blocking.”

The Bruins blasted seven of their 10 blocks en route to a commanding 25-14 triumph in the second set. In the frame, UCLA forced Indiana to a negative hitting percentage at a -.125% clip and 11 attack errors. Becker led at the net and brought the Bruins to a four-point advantage as she contributed three straight block assists.
Redshirt senior middle blocker Anna Dodson notched two blocks for UCLA’s 23rd and 25th points in the second frame, carving the sixth Bruin name in the block column.
Saturday’s match saw a repeat of history as the Bruins took down the Beach for the 11th consecutive time.
The Bruins claimed a 3-1 victory accompanied by 19 blocks, their third-highest blocking total in a game.
The Northwestern graduate transfer leads the team with 1.38 blocks per set throughout the Bruins’ first five games. Atop seven kills on a .429 clip Saturday night, Becker recorded a career-high nine blocks.
“Me and Des (Becker) have a really great relationship and connection,” Dodson said. “The people on the bench are always looking to see how we can upgrade.”
Dodson was UCLA’s most productive player, mustering 12 kills and striking at a .6. The redshirt senior managed a .333 clip when the Bruins met the Beach in Dodson’s sophomore season.
“I think the team has developed immensely since my sophomore year,” Dodson said. “Our culture is stronger than ever, and our systems have improved.”
