Through four innings, junior outfielder JonJon Vaughns looked like he would be the star of Tuesday’s show.

But a home run, a triple and five RBIs later, it was USC center fielder Austin Overn who brought Hollywood to Scottsdale, Arizona.

In the fifth contest between the Los Angeles rivals, No. 4 seed USC (34-22-1, 17-13 Pac-12) emerged victorious over No. 7 seed UCLA baseball (27-24-1, 12-16-1) by a score of 6-4 in the Pool C opener at the Pac-12 tournament. Overn tied the game at four apiece on a three-run home run in the fifth before giving the Trojans the lead on a two-RBI triple an inning later.

Coach John Savage said Overn’s success was a combination of good hitting and capitalizing on mistakes.

“It’s a little bit of both,” Savage said. “Change, obviously it’s not a good pitch. He hits it out of the ballpark. The 2-1 curveball that he hit down the line is a mistake, but good hitters hit mistakes, and you got to give credit where credit’s due.”

After reaching on a double, Vaughns put the Bruins on the board in the third following a fielding error by Trojan shortstop Ryan Jackson. The left-handed slugger added on with a fourth-inning bases-clearing double to secure a 4-1 lead.

In the back half of the game, though, Overn eclipsed Vaughns’ early heroics.

The Trojans’ leadoff hitter collected his first three RBIs in the fifth when he tied the game on a homer off junior right-hander Jake Brooks. The following inning, Brooks put two men on and Savage called on freshman right-hander Michael Barnett to face Overn.

When Barnett allowed a triple into the right-field corner, USC gained a 6-4 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

After missing his final start of the regular season, Brooks finished his day charged with six runs – five of which were earned – across 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits while striking out five.

“I liked his outing,” Savage said. “He made a couple mistakes, but overall, I thought he really made a lot of pitches. This is a really hard place to pitch. It’s a very, very offensive place.”

Barnett followed Brooks and combined with right-handers redshirt sophomore Chris Aldrich and senior Charles Harrison to hold the two-run deficit across the final 2.1 innings.

Despite placing a runner in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth, UCLA was unable to cut into USC’s lead. After starting his day with a pair of doubles, Vaughns went 0-2 with a strikeout and recorded the Bruins’ first out in the ninth inning.

Savage said the lack of scoring late in the game was disappointing.

“We had our chances. We had some opportunities, and we just weren’t able to cash in,” Savage said. “Just kind of been the story over the last month and a half of just coming up short in certain situations.”

Junior third baseman Kyle Karros exited the game after a pitch hit his head during his first at-bat. The collision jostled his helmet, causing a cut on Karros’ forehead.

Savage said Karros is in concussion protocol, but examination at the hospital revealed no fractures.

After Karros’ injury, junior outfielder Carson Yates entered the game as a pinch runner before graduate student catcher Knox Loposer took over at third base for the rest of the affair.

With the loss, UCLA drops to 0-1 in pool play and will need to win Wednesday’s contest against No. 3 seed Washington – as well as some tiebreaker help – in order to advance to Friday’s semifinal.
