A fourth-inning intentional walk turned the order over and loaded the bases for Cody Schrier.

“I knew when that happened, he’d take that personal,” said coach John Savage.

Back at the top of the lineup, UCLA’s sophomore shortstop made UC Davis pay for the free pass.

“Right away, I was a little confused,” Schrier said. “But I thought, ‘Hey, maybe it’s the right move.’ Turned out not to be.”

Schrier connected with a change up and crushed a line drive over the left-field wall for a grand slam – the second of his career. The four-spot pushed the lead to six, as No. 22 UCLA baseball (21-9-1, 8-5-1 Pac-12) cruised to an 8-2 victory over UC Davis (11-19, 3-9 Big West) on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium, winning the series after claiming Friday’s affair 3-2.

Sophomore first baseman Jack Holman hit a solo home run while three other Bruins notched RBIs against the Aggies on Saturday. Featuring on the mound, sophomore right-hander Alonzo Tredwell pitched a career-high-tying six innings, allowing one run while striking out five and walking two.

“At the end of the day, Zo gave us what we wanted,” Savage said. “And then Cody came up with a big hit, so (it was) good enough to get the win.”

Tredwell reached 90-plus pitches for the first time in a month. Since returning from injury April 2, the 6-foot-8 starter was removed with 67 and 73 pitches, respectively, in recent outings against Washington State and Utah.

Although UCLA’s Saturday triumph was lopsided in the Bruins’ favor, Friday’s contest was tight until the final out.

After junior right-hander Jake Brooks allowed two first-inning runs, the Bruins took down the Aggies in comeback fashion.

Freshman outfielder Jarrod Hocking struck his first collegiate home run in the third inning, while junior outfielder Carson Yates hit a solo shot of his own to knot the contest at two in the fifth.

Savage said Hocking pounced on his chance to become a regular in the Bruins’ starting lineup.

“He certainly has a bright future,” Savage said. “He’s one of those guys who didn’t have a lot of bats early on, but he remained ready. You just have to tip your hat to a guy like that.”

Holman then provided the Bruins their only lead of the contest when he ripped what would become a game-winning RBI double in the seventh.

Savage turned to his bullpen for the final nine outs, and a high-leverage duo closed the game out.

Sophomore left-hander Ethan Flanagan hurled a season-high two hitless frames and struck out five of the six batters he faced. Freshman right-hander Cody Delvecchio relieved Flanagan and tossed a scoreless ninth to secure his second save of the season.

Flanagan, who missed almost the first two months of the season with a left-arm injury, earned his first victory of the year. The southpaw said that despite an initial position in the rotation, he is ready to make an impact regardless of his role.

“I’m just looking out for the team,” Flanagan said. “The whole preseason, (I was) working as a starter, so I’d assume that is sort of the plan. But right now, I’m just trying to help the team in any way I can.”

UCLA returns to Jackie Robinson Stadium to face UC Davis on Sunday at 1 p.m. to attempt a series sweep.
