After a week of conference losses, injuries, and rain cancellations, the Bruins got back on track this weekend.

UCLA women’s tennis (8-5, 3-3 Pac-12) swept both matches in the latter part of its homestand, defeating Colorado (9-8, 0-5) on Friday and Utah (10-7, 1-3) on Saturday. The Bruins won all of their singles matches in straight sets and now own a combined all-time record of 33-0 against the Buffaloes and the Utes.

No. 23 freshman Fangran Tian notched two singles wins this weekend, adding to her undefeated singles record.

“Tian has been killing it,” said No. 78 sophomore Kimmi Hance. “She’s been doing unbelievable.”

Tian has slotted in at No. 1 singles in every match this season, and her play earned her the No. 23 spot in the latest ITA singles rankings, the highest of any Bruin this season. She clinched the victory against Utah, defeating opponent Madison Tattini 6-2, 6-3.

Hance secured a victory of her own this weekend, overpowering Colorado’s Elys Ventura 6-2, 6-2 on Friday to mark her first victory after a string of losses against ranked opponents last weekend. The sophomore now owns a 17-7 career dual-singles record.

Hance said this weekend’s matches were important for building morale.

“Today and yesterday were good to prove that we can still win,” Hance said. “We built our confidence.”

After their doubles winning streak dating back to February was snapped last weekend by California, No. 6 Hance and sophomore Elise Wagle responded with a victory over the Buffaloes’ Antonia Balzert and Aya El Sayed. UCLA took both doubles points this weekend amid lineup changes that paired Tian with fellow freshman Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer.

Coach Stella Sampras Webster praised the versatility of her doubles players.

“I was really happy with the way they all competed this weekend,” Sampras Webster said. “I told them, if they’re a good doubles player, they’re going to be able to play with anyone.”

Another player that experienced a shift in position was senior Sasha Vagramov. After bouncing around between No. 3 and No. 4 singles, Vagramov slotted in at the No. 5 spot this weekend. This change proved successful, as Vagramov won both her singles matches in straight sets, defeating Colorado’s Betina Tokac 6-1, 6-0 and Utah’s Marcela Lopez 6-4, 6-0.

Vagramov emphasized that she does not focus on her position in the lineup.

“I’ve never really been one to think much about that,” Vagramov said. “I’m just really grateful to be out here playing, and I’m going to play my best game wherever I’m put in the lineup.”

Vagramov – who owns a 42-31 career singles record – said she is well-acquainted with the growing pains of adjusting to college tennis.

“I’ve been trying to encourage my teammates who have been struggling to remind themselves it’s all part of your journey,” Vagramov said. “It’s all a part of the process, and there is always something to learn whether you win or lose.”

After starting her first set against Colorado 5-1, Lutkemeyer would go on to lose 5-7 and trailed 2-3 in her second set before the match concluded. Lutkemeyer was able to bounce back on Saturday, defeating Utah’s Samantha Horwood 6-1, 6-1 to provide UCLA’s first singles victory of the afternoon.

Hance said she understands the pressure Lutkemeyer faces.

“Coming into such a prestigious program like UCLA, it’s a lot of pressure,” Hance said. “Today (Lutkemeyer) did a great job, and she’ll build off that.”

UCLA will visit Tucson next Friday for a conference match against Arizona. First serve will be at 12:00 p.m..
