The Bruins managed only three shot attempts as they suffered their first loss in Pac-12 play.

No. 21 UCLA men’s socccer (5-3-1, 1-1-1 Pac-12) lost 1-0 to Oregon State (4-2-1, 1-0-0) on Thursday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The blue and gold failed to register a single shot on goal, while the Beavers attempted 11 shots in total and five shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Crockford made four saves in the match but was unable to keep out a 14th-minute attempt from Oregon State forward Ellis Spikner, who slotted the ball into the net from point-blank range after a cross from midfielder Mouhameth Thiam.

Coach Ryan Jorden said he was disappointed with his team’s execution against a veteran team like the Beavers.

“We got into shooting positions but didn’t shoot the ball,” Jorden said. “We got into crossing positions but failed to put a good ball in. And we got trapped in areas that we knew they were going to try and press us. We weren’t good enough on the night against a very experienced team.”

In front of a very involved crowd, the game was a combative one, as 32 total fouls and four total yellow cards were recorded. The contest attracted the second-largest home audience attendance of the season.

“We had a couple moments where we weren’t as calm as I would have liked, but we showed very good competitiveness throughout,” Jorden said.

Junior defender Tommy Silva echoed his coach’s sentiments about the Bruins’ ability to manage the pressure.

“They were a physical team, and there were some questionable foul calls,” Silva said. “But part of our maturing process as a team is to become more composed and tougher mentally.”

The Bruins have also dealt with a few injuries this season, including to some of their key players. Freshman midfielder Tarun Karumanchi has not seen the field in four consecutive games while last year’s top point-getter redshirt sophomore midfielder Tucker Lepley has yet to make an appearance this season.

“During the week, we work hard in practice to prepare for each team, but there are definitely some key players out, and we’re excited to get them back soon,” Silva said.

The next match for the blue and gold will be Sunday at home against another Pac-12 opponent in No. 2 Washington. Defender Nicolas Blassou – a graduate transfer from American University who has made five appearances for the Bruins thus far – said the team needs to shift its focus onto the next match.

“We have to brush this game off of our shoulders, as there’s nothing we can do about it (the loss) now,” Blassou said. “The No. 2 team in the country and another really good Pac-12 game are all we can focus on now, so we’re going to try to put this game behind us.”
