UCLA men’s basketball redshirt freshman forward Mac Etienne was arrested for assaulting a spectator following UCLA’s game at Arizona on Thursday night, according to a University of Arizona police department statement.
Etienne was seen in a video posted on social media yelling at fans in the Arizona student section following the conclusion of the game, at one point spitting at a spectator.
The media release said Etienne was cited and released for assault with intent to injure, insult or provoke – a class 3 misdemeanor – and added that the victim of the assault wanted to pursue criminal charges. Etienne was never detained.
Class 3 misdemeanors are the least severe type of misdemeanor in Arizona, with maximum punishments of 30 days of jail time, a $500 fine and a 12-month probation period.
“UCLA Athletics is committed to and expects the highest level of sportsmanship,” said Scott Markley, a UCLA spokesperson, in a written statement. “We are aware of the incident involving a student-athlete at tonight’s men’s basketball game, and the matter is under review.”
