Associated Students UCLA’s new Kerckhoff Coffee House merchandise was met with both excitement and letdowns.

Kerckhoff Coffee House is UCLA’s oldest coffee shop on campus, opening in 1976. Many students, staff and visitors frequent the coffee shop, which is located in the heart of campus.

ASUCLA decided to acknowledge Kerckhoff’s history by designing merchandise specific to the coffee shop, including t-shirts, hats and tote bags, said Cindy Bolton, food service director of UCLA restaurants. The merchandise was announced on Jan. 12 in an ASUCLA Instagram post.

Bolton said ASUCLA wanted to make merchandise to represent people’s fond memories of Kerckhoff Coffee House.

Grace Hubrig, graphic designer and social media manager for ASUCLA, said in an emailed statement that the marketing department announced the launch of the merchandise with a giveaway on the ASUCLA Instagram page.

Hubrig said the Instagram giveaway was very successful at engaging with students, receiving more than 2,300 giveaway entries over a three-day period.

“Giving back to students is a major goal of our Social Media Team, so we were excited to select two winners to receive a Kerckhoff shirt and a hat of their choosing,” Hubrig added.

The giveaway closed on Jan. 14.

Some students who entered the Instagram giveaway showed a positive reaction to the experience.

Tamara Nogueira, a second-year political science student, said she and her friends were excited for the opportunity to win free merchandise. Though they didn’t win, she said she will consider purchasing in the future.

Makayla Santos, a second-year cognitive science student, said she entered the giveaway for the Kerckhoff bucket hats. She added that she was most interested in the bucket hat and hadn’t looked at other merchandise options.

Some other students were unaware that Kerckhoff Coffee House released merchandise.

Sidra Villacorta, a first-year applied mathematics student, said she was not aware of the giveaway but would be interested in purchasing the apparel once released.

“I haven’t seen (the merchandise),” Villacorta said. “But I really like Kerckhoff. I come here at least once a week.”

Despite a promising Instagram promotion, Raidis Maypa, the special events division manager for ASUCLA restaurants, said the merchandise has not sold as expected.

Maypa said she hopes the return to in-person instruction will bring more customers to Kerckhoff Coffee House and increase exposure for the merchandise.

“I’m very curious how it will be … when winter quarter starts (in person), just because based on how fall quarter was, the lines were nonstop at the coffee house,” Maypa said. “It’s a wait and see.”
