Daily Bruin wins Pacemaker Awards in 3 categories for 2nd consecutive year

The Daily Bruin won Pacemaker Awards on Thursday for best four-year college newspaper, best website and best magazine website. The Bruin also won five awards in individual categories.

The Daily Bruin received its seventh Pacemaker Award for being one of the best national college newspapers along with two online awards for the 2019-2020 year from the Associated Collegiate Press on Thursday.

The Daily Bruin won the Newspaper Pacemaker Award alongside 14 other four-year college newspapers, including Pepperdine University’s The Pepperdine Graphic, the University of Georgia’s The Red & Black and the University of Mississippi’s The Daily Mississippian. The Associated Collegiate Press also named five two-year college newspapers as Newspaper Pacemakers.

The Pacemaker Awards are given to two-year and four-year colleges. The ACP announced winners virtually during the Fall National College Media Convention on Thursday.

Both the Daily Bruin and PRIME, The Bruin’s quarterly newsmagazine, also received awards for best online content.

This is the second year in a row the Daily Bruin has won a Pacemaker in all three categories in the same year.

The ACP chooses its newspaper award winners based on quality of coverage, content and writing, leadership, design, photography and graphics, according to the ACP website.

The Daily Bruin’s management for the 2019-2020 year includes Editor-in-Chief Angie Forburger, Managing Editor Joy Hong and Digital Managing Editor Kristie-Valerie Hoang. The 2019-2020 online editor was Thomas Gerard and the former director for PRIME was Teddy Rosenbluth.

The Daily Bruin also won awards in several individual categories.

Story of the Year:

  • “From memes to meetups, the subtle asian traits Facebook page unites cultures in a worldwide community,” a story about the community created from subtle asian traits, a Facebook group, earned an honorable mention in the Diversity Story category.

Multimedia Story of the Year Category:

  • “How Quickly Do Classes Fill Up?”, an interactive article about class enrollment made by the Stack, the Daily Bruin’s data journalism and newsroom tech blog, won first in the Interactive Graphic category.
  • “Gallery: Here’s how UCLA mixed recycling gets processed,” a gallery of photographs about how UCLA’s mixed recycling gets processed won fourth in the Photo Slideshow category.
  • “The Quad: Exploring the past, present and future of yellow fever from global to local,” a story by the Bruin’s Blogging section won fourth for a story about yellow fever in the Blog category.
  • “Natalie Chou carries on basketball tradition passed on from her mother,” a story about Natalie Chou, a women’s basketball player, earned an honorable mention in the Multimedia Sports Story category.

COVID-19 Coverage Category:

  • The Bruin won first in the Online: COVID-19 News or Feature Story category for a feature page that contained COVID-19-related articles and tracked COVID-19 cases at UCLA.

Max Wu won fifth for COVID-19 Designs/Visuals for Unfinished Stories.
