Government affects all aspects of our lives. As we enter a critical election period, it is more important now than ever to be educated on public policy and to recognize the impact that policies enacted at the local, federal, and state level have on each of us. Students are the next generation of leaders and change-makers; their engagement in politics and public policy cannot be understated. “Introduction to Public Policy Analysis,” a fully remote course offered through UC Online, provides a comprehensive introduction to the social science analysis of public policy. Through examining the importance of public policies, why they succeed or fail, and how they get implemented, students will develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the workings of democratic institutions.

Introduction to Public Policy Analysis is an interdisciplinary course that features perspectives from political science, economics, sociology and other areas. The multi-faceted nature of this course allows students to examine a broad range of topics within politics such as taxation, housing and healthcare, environment, economic development, and welfare programs. Students will be examining contrasting theories, reading a variety of different texts, and debating classic questions alongside the most recent political controversies.

This course is open to all UC students and is conducted completely online. While there is no scheduled time devoted for lectures, it is the students’ responsibility to watch and study the lecture videos and complete readings routinely and promptly. Exams will take place every two weeks, therefore it is important that students do not fall behind with course material. Attendance at discussion sections for the scheduled time is mandatory, and students will be evaluated for participation. Final grades are determined from five online exams, three writing assignments, and discussion section participation. Please refer to the syllabus for more information about the grade breakdown and course expectations and learning objectives.

Introduction to Policy Analysis is the perfect course for those looking to enhance their understanding of public policy. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply the knowledge they have gained to their experiences in their past, present, and future careers and citizenship. The next generation of change-makers and policy influencers are in this class!
