Elaine Reodica Shyu graduated in 2009 studying political science. Victor Shyu graduated in 2008 studying economics and earned an MBA in 2016. Elaine’s best memory at UCLA was when she won Financial Support Commissioner for USAC. Victor’s best memory was being the basketball manager and witnessing UCLA play in the finals for the national champion title. The two instantly hit it off when Victor asked Elaine to his fraternity’s formal. The original photo was taken just two weeks before their relationship became official. Now, nine years later, they have been happily married for six months.

Justin Yang graduated in 2007 with his bachelor’s in Asian American studies. One of the classes that stuck out, that he still applies to his career as a pharmaceutical sales representative, was on Asian-Americans in the workplace. Some of Yang’s best memories include working at Relaxtation, the boba shop in Ackerman Union before Lollicup Fresh replaced it, and being a BearWear model. Even though it has been 11 years since Yang graduated, his photo is still used in pamphlets and other UCLA advertisements.

Kevin Ellis studied civil engineering and graduated in 2014. Ellis was the president of The Den, which helped him network and land his current job as a civil engineer. His involvement at UCLA continued even after he graduated, as he comes back to campus at least once a month to participate in Silicon Beach Bruins and in the Chancellor’s Society on Young Alumni Development Council. His best memory was being The Den’s president when Pauley Pavilion reopened in 2012, allowing him to lead the student section in the new-and-improved arena.

Roger Myers studied philosophy and graduated in 1967. His daughter, Julie Myers King, studied history and graduated in 1992. Now, her twin sons Steven and Kevin King are graduating with a history and a political science degrees, respectively. The family of Bruins has made incredible memories here: Julie met John Wooden twice, Steven and Kevin traveled the world with the marching band, and Roger got to watch his daughter and grandsons thrive in the school he fell in love with when he was a student.

Lauren Manix graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s in European studies. Like many Bruins, UCLA became Manix’s home, helping her become a leader and feel more comfortable in her own skin. Some of her best memories include tunneling and climbing up Royce towers her senior year. Manix is currently in the process of moving to New York to pursue her career in acting. Her goal is to develop a project that provides roles for women and faces that aren’t normally in the spotlight. When asked if she could go back and tell her student self one thing, she said to not worry so much about getting everything right and to enjoy the journey.

Margaret Molina received her bachelor’s in history and Chicana/o studies in 1993, her master’s in urban studies in 1995 and her law degree in 1998. Ernest Balderas received his bachelor’s in sociology in 1993. The two met in 1988 during their freshman summer program and have been close friends ever since. Now Molina is a lawyer and Balderas owns a successful production company for performing arts events. As the two celebrate 30 years of friendship, they reflect on how UCLA has impacted their lives. Molina’s participation in a tri-mentorship program paved the way to her career in law, and Balderas thanks UCLA for opening his eyes to the power of diversity.

Veronica Arevalo graduated in 1994 with her bachelor’s in Spanish literature. She is originally pictured holding her little brother, but recreated the photo holding her son Julian Grecko. As a first generation college student, Arevalo wanted to be a role model for her younger siblings and show them that they could go on this path as well. She worked hard both in her classes and for her jobs such as being a resident assistant, but also enjoyed spontaneous outings with friends and late night pizzas while studying. Now the middle school Spanish teacher refers to her time at UCLA as the best years of her youth.
