Redshirt senior Oliver Martin had two block assists and one solo block in UCLA men’s volleyball’s sweep of USC on Wednesday night. The Bruins' defense held the Trojans to a team hitting percentage of .141 on the match.

Senior opposite Christian Hessenauer leads the Bruins in kills with 176 on the season. He put up 11 kills for a hitting percentage of .412 in UCLA’s win over USC.

UCLA posted a team hitting percentage of .458 on the night – the Bruins’ sixth consecutive match hitting .400 or better. Martin recorded six kills on the night.

Senior JT Hatch has played both libero and outside hitter this season. Against USC, Hatch had six kills, two aces and two digs.

Hessenauer is first in UCLA and 16th in the nation in kills per set with 3.45.

Hessenauer came off the bench last season, but this year he has been a key part of the Bruins’ offense. He has recorded double-digit kills in 10 matches this season, including 11 against the Trojans.

UCLA has a well-balanced attack that includes Hatch hitting from both the front and back row. Five Bruins had at least six kills in Wednesday’s win, and they all had a hitting percentage over .300.

UCLA’s blocking and defense held USC to just 23 kills on the night. Sophomore middle blocker Daenan Gyimah led the team with five block assists.

Coach John Speraw said he was surprised with how blocking has become a major strength of the team this season, because it was a weakness earlier in the season. UCLA had nine total blocks against USC.

Gyimah had seven errorless kills on Wednesday night. The sophomore leads the nation in hitting percentage at .514.

This is UCLA’s fifth consecutive win over USC – the last time the Bruins lost to the Trojans was in five sets in 2015.
