UCPD investigating online comment made toward sorority

University police are investigating an online comment made toward the Alpha Phi sorority Monday.

The comment, written in the comments section of the sorority’s recruitment video on YouTube, was a short written excerpt from the video manifesto released by Elliot Rodger, the man who killed six people in Isla Vista, California, in May 2014.

Police are tracing the IP address of the person who commented on the video to identify their location, but the process takes some time, said Bob Leinweber, captain of the operations bureau for UCPD.

“(The comment) wasn’t a specific threat, but because the quote was taken from this person, that naturally creates concern,” Leinweber said.

Rodger’s video laid out his plans to attack a UC Santa Barbara sorority house. The video was posted on YouTube two hours before he began the shooting spree that killed six people near UCSB in 2014.

The Alpha Phi video has since been made private.

Additional patrols have been stationed on sorority row as the investigation continues, said Rebecca Kendall, a UCLA spokesperson.
