After you have your mug cake and are feeling at home, you can lift up your head and try to imagine a starry sky – or you can fake it with a few simple steps. Even though you may be in a small, crowded dorm room, you can still create the illusion of a night sky.

All that you require are Ping-Pong balls and simple string lights. The balls are placed over the bulbs to diffuse the light, mimicking the soft glow created by the balls of gas that decorate the sky.

Materials:

A string of twinkling lights – $9.17 for 100 count

Equal number of Ping-Pong balls – $9.30 for pack of 144

(Prices according to Amazon.)

Tools:

Box cutter

Super glue

Directions:

1) Using the box cutter, cut an ‘X’ into the Ping-Pong balls. Exercise caution when using the knife.

2) Push the Ping-Pong ball onto the light bulb.

3) To secure, put a small dab of super glue on the Ping-Pong ball.

4) Plug in the lights, and enjoy your night sky!

Added tips:

For some added color, use colored twinkling lights instead of white.

Paint the Ping-Pong balls different colors or different designs to have a more varied night sky.

Cut extra holes in the Ping-Pong balls if you want a little extra light.
