Westwood Community Council recap – July 19

By Roberto Luna Jr.

July 22, 2016 9:07 a.m.

The Westwood Community Council meets several times a year to discuss issues relevant to the Westwood Village business and residential community.

Discussion

  • UCLA Administrative Vice Chancellor Michael Beck and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Housing and Hospitality Services Peter Angelis met with the council to answer questions about UCLA’s upcoming plans. Beck also serves on the Westwood Village Improvement Association board of directors on the UCLA seat.

  • Beck discussed last month’s murder-suicide, and the UCLA administration plans to install lock systems in classrooms throughout campus. He also said they are looking to improve the BruinAlert system.

  • Angelis said UCLA officials will find room for 2,500 beds for the enrollment increase and the 2024 Olympic Games, but did not specify where.

  • Angelis said he thinks North Village landlords should invest in furnished apartments similar to university apartments to reduce the amount of trash in the area.

  • Beck said he disagreed with council member Clinton Schudy’s idea of a BruinBus route from the Hill to Westwood Village. Instead, he said he thinks Westwood should attract businesses to make students want to go the Village.

  • Beck said UCLA officials are excited about the Purple Line reaching Westwood by 2024 or 2035, but do not have set plans on development near the planned station, which would be adjacent to Lot 36.

  • Angelis said community members will get a chance to tour the new Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center sometime in August.

Motions

  • The council voted against giving SpireWorks, a Turkish fast-casual restaurant, a permit to sell beer and wine. Chair Steve Sann said Westwood Village has exceeded the number of permits it can give.
