Week in Photos Spring Week 7

The 27th annual Chinese American Culture Night was held Saturday at 7 p.m. in Royce Hall.

The theme was Written in the Moment and the event explored the difficulty of communicating love and gratitude within Chinese American families due to generational gaps between immigrant parents and their second generation children.

The American Indian Student Association, an organization that aims to promote education in American Indian culture, hosted its 31st annual UCLA Pow Wow at the North Athletic Field on May 7 and 8.

The event featured several vendors, dance competitions and the crowning of Ms. UCLA Pow Wow 2016-2017.

After barely missing the cut at the 2000 Olympic trials, current UCLA sprints, hurdles and relays assistant coach Joanna Hayes placed second in the 2004 Olympic Trials. Hayes then went on to win the gold medal in the 100m hurdles, setting a then-Olympic record.

Celebrity attendees such as Rosario Dawson, Josh Hutcherson and Zoe Kravitz explained the voting process and endorsed Sanders as they helped students register to vote. About 150 people attended the event, hosted by Bruins for Bernie, a student organization.

Stephan Chiu, a third-year UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine student, loved learning about medicine, suturing wounds and helping patients. But the clinic’s rigid hierarchy and harsh hours made him disillusioned – he said his supervising physicians often treated him dismissively and that he felt exhausted after waking up at 4 a.m. and staying on his feet all day.

Nicholas Orozco, a UCLA alumni and a fourth-year medical student at UCSF, was part of a joint medical school program between UC Berkeley and UCSF. Orozco is specializing in emergency medicine. He hopes to give back to his community after being stationed at the USC Medical Center.

UCSF also has a separate program for medical students, faculty and staff, called the Medical Student Well-Being Program. Vittorio Comelli, the assistant director of the program, targets events, workshops and appointment times to the schedules of third-years spread out across the city of San Francisco.

Donna Egnatios taught her son, Jeremy Egnatios, to always care for others, though he felt the symptoms of his bipolar disorder prevented him from believing he could be a physician. Nevertheless, his mother said Jeremy Egnatios was a caring person who helped his fellow students with their studying, saw patients at a student-run free clinic and worked at multiple research laboratories. He died by suicide in June 2015.

Jessica Chow, a fourth-year UCSF School of Medicine student, began seeing a therapist after her professor noticed her struggling behind in class. She said she was grateful for his advice because his reaching out showed her he cared.

The Vegan Joint in West Los Angeles, a restaurant best known for its Asian-inspired dishes, also serves breakfast burritos, omelettes and pancakes.

Sophomore Martin Redlicki originally committed to Duke to join his older brother on the tennis team, but after his brother had a falling out with the Blue Devils' coach, the younger Redlicki signed with UCLA.
