Nine-year-old Do Hun Kim walked into Paraná, Brazil, excited to begin what he thought was a vacation. At the time, he was unaware Brazil would be his home for the next 34 years. Kim’s knowledge of Brazilian cuisine and culture later helped him make a living for his family in Westwood Village. Kim, now the owner and head chef of Mesa Brazilian Eatery on Lindbrook Avenue, cooks traditional Brazilian dishes – meat, beans, rice and cheese balls, among other selections – inspired by his upbringing in Brazil. Kim grew up in Kumho-dong, South Korea, before immigrating to Brazil shortly after the Korean War. He was born three years after the war ended, but said he experienced the poverty and unemployment that came with its aftermath.

Ruoxuan Li’s costume design takes the form of dresses in green and pink plaid and elegant velvet coats on the stage of “Cosi Fan Tutte.” She feels she shines whenever she makes actors on stage shine through her costume designs. “Costume design is not just about making pretty dresses or fancy stuff,” Li said. “It’s also about telling a story through costumes.”

She said it was one of the most time-consuming, but also rewarding, shows she has been involved in because it required three costume changes for the characters, more than usual in opera.

Third-year psychobiology student Hudson and two other students will be makeup artists for the UCLA Cultural Affairs Commission’s fashion show, “So Fresh and So Clean,” Thursday. A budding makeup artist, Hudson was chosen because she can craft natural looks for people of color.

Hudson said she began viewing YouTube tutorials from YouTubers like Jackie Aina and Vicky Logan in December 2014, obsessively practicing challenging techniques in a mirror for one to two hours each day. Learning online was initially difficult, Hudson said, because she couldn’t ask anyone questions, but she found YouTubers would often respond to questions posted in the comments.

“It’s an obsession,” Tran said. “It’s kind of like my catharsis. It’s my little getaway at the end of the day after a hard day … it’s just there.” Tran, a UCLA alumna, turned her love of makeup into something more than a hobby after being invited by a longtime friend, a makeup artist at New York Fashion Week, to help out to apply different makeup looks on the runway models.
