UCPD holds training program for handling active shooter situations

University police held a training program beginning last month in Pauley Pavilion to teach UCLA employees how to react to active shooter situations.
Janina Montero, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, reached out to UCPD and asked officers to train about 15,000 employees in student affairs departments, such as UCLA Recreation, UCLA Athletics and Residential Life, said UCPD Lt. Mark Littlestone. The program lasted from Jan. 29 to Feb. 8.
In 2015, there were 23 college campus shootings, including one in Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, that left nine dead and nine injured.
UCLA officials sent BruinAlerts to notify students that police officers would fire guns in Pauley Pavilion Club to show trainees how guns sound and how to react when they are fired. UCPD officials also suggested employees report any suspicious activity to prevent active shooter situations.
