An event commemorating Berky Nelson was held on Jan. 19 at Pauley Pavilion where relatives, colleagues and friends attended.

Marcia Mill, Berky Nelson's wife, attended the memorial Tuesday. "Berky Nelson has been my significant other for the past four years. I hit the jackpot. ... We have just had a stupendous relationship because of his kindness, his gentleness, his intellect and his foresight. We had a beautiful four years traveling together and going to UCLA basketball games. I miss him dearly of course, but his contributions live on."

Kevin Dougherty, associate dean and director of fraternity and sorority relations and an attendee, remembers Berky Nelson. "He is missed, and he was a true respiration to students, faculty, and staff here at UCLA."

Denise Marshall, a second year transfer African American studies student, attended the service to remember Nelson's impact on the Community Programs Office, where she currently works and helps other students.

Lawrence Cross has been a close friend of both Nelson and his first wife Joan for the past 15 years. Cross remembers Nelson's dedication to the fraternity Sigma Pi Phi.

Bruce Herring, Berky's fraternity brother, pays tribute to his dear friend. "Berky was indescribable, a stellar man. I met him about 15 years ago. He was my fraternity brother. I used to have dancing contests with him but he was our best dancer. I remember how fluid he was. ... He touched everyone's lives," Herring said.
