Tim Groeling, professor and chair of the communication studies department, is digitizing a collection of thousands of hours of audio recordings and television shows stored on videotapes. Some of which date back to the 17th century.

The employees at Westwood Ralphs deli work with pastas, salads, meats and cheeses for the lunch rush. Timothy Kauthen (above) hopes to perform theater in New York someday, while his coworkers are passionate about horror literature, family counseling, photography and fashion.

Ethnomusicology lecturer Rahul Neuman was introduced to the Indian sitar, an 18- to 21-string instrument, at a young age by his family of professional sitarists and ethnomusicologists.

Outside of being a teaching assistant, musicology graduate student Shelina Brown is part of a punk rock band PANTHAR, which blends feminist art punk and up-tempo, guitar-driven 80s goth rock.

Shelina Brown grew up listening to Japanese pop when she lived in Japan but discovered punk and rock as a teenager when she moved to Canada.

Fourth-year geography and environmental studies student Zi Jie Tan documented his travels around the world through his personal Instagram account. Tan posted a photo journal for 213 days from Africa to South America.

UCLA alumna Tali Aires started dancing with Karmagraphy, a Los Angeles-based Indian fusion entertainment company, this past September. Aires has a dedicated time for learning Indian culture during her rehearsals and said her world arts and cultures studies gave her the foundation she needed to take on cultural dances like Bharatanatyam and Bollywood.

Aires now performs regularly at traditional Indian weddings. Aires said audience members usually approach her with compliments on her skill.

Fourth-year communication studies student Brenda Lienh (left) met fourth-year sociology student William Lam (right) as novice dancers in 2013. Now in a relationship, they are dancers for Samahang Modern and share other similar activities, including internships at Snapchat and NBC Universal’s E! Entertainment.
