A police officer fatally shot a 26-year-old man Saturday afternoon at a UCLA-affiliated hospital in Torrance after the man allegedly tried to grab the officer’s gun.

Police responded to a call Saturday morning about a man vandalizing an apartment complex in Torrance, said LAPD spokesperson Jane Kim.

Following a confrontation with police, the man was sent to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center’s emergency room to be treated for injuries, she said.

Police took off the man’s handcuffs about 2:30 p.m., and the man grabbed a metal stool and began to swing it. Kim said an officer shot him after the man attempted to grab his gun.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.
