
Louis Paul Benedict, an 88-year-old World War II veteran, enlisted in the army at age 17 and served as a signalman on the USS Ajax.

UCLA student groups and community members participated in a Veterans Day ceremony, which honored those associated with the university who have defended our freedom through their military service. The event took place in Wilson plaza on Tuesday morning and featured guest speakers and an information fair.

Hundreds of students, faculty members, staff and alumni rallied in front of Powell Library Thursday afternoon, supporting students at the University of Missouri who are protesting racially-charged incidents on their campus.The Afrikan Student Union, which led the rally, and faculty members spoke to a crowd of 200 about the similarities between racial issues at the University of Missouri and UCLA. They also chanted “Black Bruins Matter” with posters and fists held in the air.

On Monday, the University of Missouri’s president and chancellor resigned after the football team and a graduate student went on a strike because they thought administrators were not adequately responding to racially charged incidents. UCLA’s ASU chapter hosted the Thursday rally to show support for administrative change in response to students voicing their concerns about discrimination in Missouri.

Students such as four-year musical theater student Catriona Fray (right) will perform for the 100th anniversary of Frank Sinatra's birth. Premiering Nov. 19 at the Freud Playhouse, "Lainie's Cabaret" will feature UCLA students performing in the style of Frank Sinatra. The event is the culmination of an annual workshop on campus, taught by UCLA visiting associate professor and award-winning actress and singer Lainie Kazan.

Steven Vanhauwaert said that the different experiences of the composers affect the sound of the pieces. He and Sutre chose to perform compositions by Pfitzner, Debussy and Antoine to see how their music reflected their experiences.

Third-year anthropology student Nikita Bichitty, dressed in beautiful, colorful attire, will participate in the American Indian Students fashion show for Native Heritage Week. At the fashion show, Bichitty will feature attire for Fancy Shawl, a traditional Navajo powwow dance.

The Sawtelle branch of Plan Check Kitchen and Bar is one of three locations that offer a monthlong Gudetama-themed menu. Shown are sunny quail egg sliders, made with cheese, bacon, ketchup leather and hot sauce. Eggs represent Gudetama, the latest anthropomorphized character from Sanrio, the Japanese makers of Hello Kitty. The company describes Gudetama as a lazy egg, which students explain is fitting for their college experiences.

Philippe Videau, a fifth-year aerospace engineering student, helped create a flexible helmet that can mold to customized head shapes from a structure found in mushrooms.

Philippe Videau holds a single flexible triangular piece in his hand. Previously, the piece was used in an entire bike helmet with an organic frame made of mycelium, a structure found in mushrooms.

Freshman Kyra Rogers has been an outside hitter for the UCLA women's volleyball team after playing as a middle blocker for all four years of high school.

Junior men's tennis player Mackie McDonald lost in the first round of the Knoxville 2015 Challenger Wednesday morning. The event was his third Challenger of the fall season.

Freshman midfielder Jackson Yueill is fouled by Washington senior defender Michael Gallagher. Gallagher would receive a red card for the foul and UCLA would win the match 2-1.
