Week in Photos Fall Week 2

Attendees waited in line to receive a paper plate, plastic fork and tickets, which were redeemed for two slices of pie from bakers against the backdrop of Kaufman Hall.

The pie contest featured desserts made by both professionals and home cooks, some of whom said they learned techniques from their mothers in the kitchen.

Actor Tony Todd (left) will play boxer Jack Johnson in the play "Ghost in the House: The Life and Times of Jack Johnson,” premiering in Schoenberg Hall Friday. Playing Johnson allowed Todd to reflect on both the athlete's life and the mirroring of racial tension in America then and now. Johnson learned how to fight in bare-knuckle street fights at nine years old, becoming the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion.

Amberly Bark helped create a club track and field team this fall to organize practices and workouts for students who want to run competitively, but without the demands of an NCAA Division I team.

Bark came to UCLA unsure whether civil engineering was the right choice, but joining the American Society of Civil Engineers as a first year assuaged her uncertainties. She said she found a group of students in ASCE whose passion ignited her own.
