USAC Finance Committee to investigate leaked LET’S ACT! documents

The undergraduate student government council voted unanimously Tuesday to authorize the Finance Committee to investigate leaked LET’S ACT! documents that allege members of the slate used students fees to fund election campaigns.

The Finance Committee will report its findings to the Judicial Board. The Judicial Board will determine if LET’S ACT! violated any bylaws or the constitution, said Undergraduate Students Association Council President Heather Rosen.

Former USAC President Avinoam Baral created a task force comprised of Associated Students UCLA officials and current councilmembers two weeks ago to decide how to move forward with the leaked documents, Rosen added.

The task force decided Monday to transfer the responsibility of the investigation to the Finance Committee, after finding the allegations could be legitimate, Rosen said.

“We chose the Finance Committee because it is nonpartisan and has the most expansive knowledge on auditing financial records,” Rosen said. “(It) would be able to discern whether misallocation of funds did in fact take place.”

All councilmembers voted to transfer the responsibility of the investigation to the Finance Committee. LET’S ACT! campaign manager Kristine de los Santos and LET’S ACT! councilmember General Representative 3 Anais Amin both said they were open to the investigation.

USAC Finance Committee Chair Cindy Wang said she will work with the council to determine which allegations should be investigated. The duration of the investigation will depend on how much time the council gives her, Wang added.

Rosen added if the investigation is not closed by the end of this academic year, the new Finance Committee chair will review the details and take over the case.
