The Hill Top Shop will move from its usual spot to Bruin Café for the summer as workers renovate the store.

The shop, which is the main convenience store on the Hill, has not had any renovations or remodeling since its establishment in the early 1990s.

The store will operate as a pop-up shop in the entrance part of the cafe during the projected $150,000 renovation. Associated Students UCLA is paying for the project, said UCLA Store Operations Director Robin Broudy Johns.

The point of renovating the Hill Top Shop is to modernize it so that it looks more like other store locations, such as the shop in the North Campus Student Center and the UCLA Store, Broudy Johns said.

The ceiling, floors and walls of the original shop will be replaced, and the store might also get more refrigeration and products to sell, Broudy Johns said.

Fourth-year nursing student Alex Locey, who works at the Hill Top Shop, said she likes the idea of renovating the store because the store would be more aesthetically pleasing.

Broudy Johns and other ASUCLA officials working on the renovation project met with the UCLA Housing and Hospitality Services officials in early January and decided to temporarily move the Hill Top Shop’s operations to Bruin Café.

Bruin Café closes during summers depending on student demand on the Hill. Though the cafe has stayed open in the past, it closed last summer.

UCLA Dining Services officials evaluated the anticipated demand for Bruin Café this summer and concluded it should close to save money, said Charles Wilcots, an associate director of operations support for Dining Services, in an email statement.

The construction will begin in late June, and the store is set to reopen in August at its original location.
