UC extends fellowship program backing student research on food issues

The University of California will extend a program supporting UC student research and service on food issues for the next two years, the University announced Monday.
The Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program, which was announced in July, funds three projects per campus, with each fellowship worth $4,000, an increase of $1,500 from this year. The money will support student-generated research, related projects or internships focusing on food issues.
“After we opened up the Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program, I was so impressed by the quality of the fellowship recipients – and applicants – that we decided to extend the program,” UC President Janet Napolitano said in a press release announcing the extension.
More than 40 projects were given funding this year, including four from UCLA. At some campuses, including UCLA, donors supplemented UC funding to support additional fellowships. The fellowship program is part of the UC’s Global Food Initiative, which seeks to address global food issues through research and education. The initiative also calls for campuses to promote sustainable farming practices.
