Week in Photos: Spring Week 3

Joining UCLA gymnastics as a walk on, freshman Sonya Meraz started competing only in exhibition routines. But by the end of the season, she worked herself into one of the team’s all-around gymnasts. Meraz’s hard work has impressed veterans and coaches alike and has set her up for a bright future with the team.

Farheen Jamil, a fourth-year global studies student and assistant director of 7000 in Solidarity, hangs T-shirts painted by students affected by sexual violence for the Clothesline Project. The public art display started Tuesday in Dickson Court and will span until Thursday.

UCLA students took part in the #ShutDownA14 protest to promote awareness and action on campus. Several students started at the Bruin Bear, then walked to Powell Library, North Campus, South Campus and finally Wilshire Boulevard, to call for mass resistance to “stop business as usual” on April 14 in an effort to speak out against police brutality. Watch this short highlight reel of the protest and interviews with those involved.

Design | Media Arts graduate student Hsin-Yu Lin’s solo exhibition, “Kin Ku Ki Kwan (The Encyclopedia of Timid Knowledge)” will open Thursday in Broad 1250. The wax-covered installation will be accompanied by a game, which Lin said will guide viewers to interact with the sculpture and space.

Megan Driscoll, the owner of Eat Sweets Pastry, loves the freedom that comes with being a pastry chef of her own store located on Gayley Ave. She decorates the pastries and personalizes them, baking numerous cupcakes, cookies and macarons.

Anderson School of Management student Scott Sugimoto employs an attacking and reckless style of fencing, whereas many other fencers are more graceful and light on their feet. Sugimoto said he does this to dictate the tone of his matches.
